Solvang Power Training Camp with Hunter Allen - Summary
A total of 15 campers showed up for the camp with 2 coaches (Hunter Allen and Adnan Kadir). Few more support staff members also showed up to provide support during the camp (Robin Horwitz, Matt Idler, Jill Gass, and Andrew Hardart). Also we had a great mechanic as well providing quick fixes and support to all cyclists - Matt Kephardt of Bike Barn.
On Monday, we spent the day cycling around the area close to Route 1. During the ride, we conducted 1 and 5 minutes tests to be analyzed indvidually in the afternoon with each coach. That evening, Hunter Allen spent the time introducing the concept of Power Training to all campers. It was a great start to a a great week.
Tuesday, we went over to a very flat section of road and did some sprint workouts. When Hunter taught about the technique of sprinting and how to get the most out of your sprinting abilities, a lot of campers recorded their personal bests of 5 seconds output. In the afternoon, the cyclists spent time analyzing their files with Adnan and Hunter. In the evening, we spent time discussing the training periodization concept.
Wednesday, a killer loop including Figueroa mountain awaited us. Also the beautiful sunny and warm weather greeted us like an old friend. The cyclists spent most of the time going thru the beautiful vineyards of Santa Barbara before tackling on the steep and long mountain. Hunter spent time videotaping each cyclists' climbing position. We eventually came back to Solvang and went over to Kalyra Winery to have some wine and lunch. In the late afternoon, analysis of each riders were provided along individually. The campers were treated to a day of laundry while they rested and ate dinner. That evening, Hunter discussed the cycling position of each rider and the feedback was great help to all campers
Thursday, the storms loomed large but did not prevent us from doing the Individual Time Trial Course of Tour of California. Hunter also spent time videotaping the riders' time trial position. In the afternoon, Hunter discussed the fine points of stretching and provided analysis of the data. Some of us retreated to the conference room and watched the Tour of California stage on the web. Hunter pointed out the time trial positions using the video analysis that evening.
Friday, we pre-rode the ITT course with the Lotto Team (Fred Rodriquez, Chris Horner, Mario Aerts and more) and that was a great experience. Then in the afternoon, some of us rode in the Lotto chase van following Rodriquez's ITT run. Some of us were walking around and enjoying the TOC festivities. In the evening, some of us went to the TOC gala. Just a perfect day for relaxation and surround ourselves with cycling.
On Saturday, a 6 hour ride awaited us and we weren't disappointed. Figueroa Mountain was closed due to snow on the road and we had to find an alternative route that led us to close to Santa Maria. A beautiful canyon climb and down into the valley was tons of fun. After a lunch to recharge our batteries, we rode back to Solvang with what we all learned during the week (pacelining, cornering, etc). In the evening, we had some pizza and beer.
